The video game world lost one of its greatest pioneers this month with the passing of Yoshihisa Kishimoto. The beat ’em up genre wouldn’t be what it without the intuitive controls and cinematic elements the games he worked on helped define or sharpen.

Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun, its English localization version known as Renegade, and Double Dragon hit arcades with a rawness that was rare at the time, but those games also brought so much more than that, thanks to Kishimoto. As different as the controls from the side-scrolling brawlers made before them, they also felt solid and even second nature after a bit of playing. Even now, there’s a lot of satisfaction in landing a back kick or headbutt in Double Dragon. That was a good thing, as those were some of the first games many of us ever played where it felt like whole crews of sneaky, dangerous enemies were coming at us instead of waves of unthinking drones. It was like being trapped in an 1980s Golden Harvest martial arts flick where every villain was nearly as skilled as the heroes and the only key to survival was a mix of wits, skill, and speed.

Kishimoto’s brawlers had other film-like touches, with enemies and bosses sometimes entering the scene by door, elevator, or demonstrating their strength by punching through a background wall. Kidnappings and rescues happening on the play field kept you in the moment, keeping that feeling that you were in a movie. His earlier game direction gigs included anime FMV games like Thunder Storm/Cobra Command and Road Avenger (player vehicles from both were referenced in the first two Double Dragon games), so cinematic thinking wasn’t new to him.

He also directed fan-favorites in another genre known for fisticuffs and chaos: wrestling. WWF Superstars and WWF Wrestlefest were arcade staples so solid that it was appreciated even outside wrestling fandom. Once again, those controls just felt right and the hits felt solid, making it a perfect game to play with a bunch of friends or strangers at the mall.

He’s been gone for over a week at the time I’m writing this, and it honestly took that long for me to write about him because what he created means that much. I was in my teens when he made these games, and I have a lot of great memories playing these games with friends. The first article in the Minus World section of this site is named after my friend Kenyon yelling, “INTO THE DRINK!” in a perfect Popeye imitation after kicking a biker into the water while playing Renegade. Even when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Final Fight, and other brawlers were in the limelight at the arcade, I still made sure to stop at the Double Dragon cabinet on the left hand side near the front of the arcade to get in a few more hits. This site probably wouldn’t exist without his work. It feels like he deserves far more than whatever ramblings I’m able to type, and I hope more writers do that for him. Yoshihisa Kishimoto deserves all the tributes he’s been getting and many, many more. Thank you, Mr. Kishimoto.

It’s a borderline random update, but I’ve been working on borderline random things this month.

Custom Sprites:
Bucky O’Hare (new gallery): Bucky O’Hare, apparently here to celebrate two holidays at once!
– Marvel Comics: Crystal in classic yellow, FF, and her 90s black and white suit with bomber jacket (as seen in Avengers in Galactic Storm).
Kunio-kun/River City Ransom 8-bit: Scratch-made Link, Zelda, Marvel’s Storm, Black Tiger (Capcom).

Now that I have separate Superhero Sprite Showcase episodes for all the characters I’ve done them for so far, I’m embedding them in their sub-galleries.
SupermanWolverineIron ManBatmanStorm

Mini-Logos: Bucky O’Hare added to Comics – other and Crystal added to Marvel.

All new custom sprites and mini-logos were added to the PHP-powered GFX Generators where I made the screenshot at the top of this post! The fighting game-scale sprites are in this big graphic maker while the Kunio/RCR stuff is used in this screenshot maker that focuses on 8-bit screens.

I also added four new Bunnysuit Gal sprites with longer hair for a little variety! The have the same extra palette options as the earlier sprites, so you can customize them far more than I did here.

Game Index: Avengers in Galactic Storm: added a page for it that also contains scans of the very early behind-the-scenes article on the game from the 1995 “Captain America Collectors’ Preview” comic. If you didn’t see the post I made about it before, this was from when the game was almost a side-scrolling beat ’em up/fighting game hybrid and had more playable characters. I have more to add to this entry in the future, but I really just wanted to get this update out there for Easter!

The Trick or Beat ‘Em Up project, the horror-themed side-scrolling brawler, is currently taking donations for fund work on the game. One of the goals is to “Immortalize Batsy The Cat” in pixel art that lives on in the game. Please read the plea and give if you can!

Hot dang, that’s a lot of twos! This site is going to celebrate that with some new Double Dragon sprites, along with some other twins, including another pair of Technos game twins!

Double Dragon: Billy and Jimmy Lee (Double Dragon Advance cover art pose), Skullmageddon (Double Dragon Neon), an update of my 2017 Chin Taimei sprite
Kunio-kun: the Hattori Twins/Dragon Twins (who are based on the Lee Brothers)
Streets of Rage: Onihime and Yasha (a.k.a. Mona and Lisa) had their standing and crouching sprites redone
DC Comics: the Wonder Twins Zan and Jayna (sorry, you’ll have to wait for Gleek)
G.I.JOE: Tomax and Xamot, evil twin brothers!

All new sprites have been added to the main image generator, where you can create graphics like the one at the top of this post!

Finally, because I couldn’t let this day happen without doing this, here’s the Double Dragon Sprite Showcase video!

Stay tuned, there’ll be a “Yo Joe!” update later this week!

The Beat ‘Em Up Showcade is ready! Okay, the video has been up since yesterday, BUT STILL. I originally planned to have Showcase videos for Double Dragon and Bad Dudes last year, but *shrugs* 2020. You know what I mean. Trying to make them in 2021 didn’t work out for better reasons, so I decided to make a Showcade filled with beat ’em ups. Nothing with an outside license (TMNT, Punisher, X-Men) is in the vid, because the straight-up game content felt a little neglected here lately. Let’s watch the video first, then I’ll break down what was added to the site.

Once again, mad thanks to Wizzy for allowing me to use that amazing BGM track for the video. I’ve had it stuck in my head since I picked it for the video, and it makes me feel like kicking doors open and throwing oil drums at people all day. AVPboy’s music does the same for me, and the added pressure of trying to do justice with their music in the videos pushes me to work harder.

Now for the newness that was added to the site itself!

Custom Sprites:
Crime Fighters: Sledge, Hawk and Boomer from Crime Fighters 2/Vendetta finally get fight stance sprites, Hawk gets a redone taunt to match, and Boomer’s taunt gets a size fix. CF2/Vendetta knife thugs were also added.
Double Dragon: Linda’s earlier two sprites completely redrawn, an extra variation of the taunt was added, and are available in arcade, NES, and DDII designs. The Billy and Jimmy Lee “JPN arcade flyer” poses were updated to fit the newer style Lee Bros. sprites I started adding months ago.
Final Fight: Maki (FF2 fight stance, select pose edited to match newer sprite), Mike Haggar – Saturday Night Slam Masters gear (also added to the Slam Masters gallery)
Growl: Jetgun
Kung-Fu Master: All Five “Sons of the Devil” (a.k.a. the Bosses) get new sprites, and Silvia gets a sprite, too.
Kunio-kun: Kunio (Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun flyer pose)
Renegade (new separate gallery): the Renegade/Mr. K, Sabu
Rushing Beat: Wendy Milan (taunt)
Streets of Rage: Barbon and Jet(SoR/BK 2) added, Skate Hunter updated (made shorter than the 2020 sprites)

All new sprites are now in the image generators, where you can make your own sprite scenes, fake screenshots, etc.

I used to say that it never feels like I’ve been doing this for more than 10 years, but after a year as crappy and time-distorted as 2020, it feels like I’ve been going for 15 years now. You may notice that this update is heavy on beat ’em up (a.k.a. belt scroll), and you’ll see why in a bit. For now, here’s the newness:

Custom Sprites
Bad Dudes: new sprites of Animal (+ Zombie Animal) and Hage Ninja
Battletoads (new separate gallery): Pimple (finally completing the playable trio)
Double Dragon: redone DDA stance Billy and Jimmy Lee (replacing the ones from the 20th ScrollBoss anniversary), classic stance Billy, Jimmy and Jeff
Kunio-kun: Misuzu (SD style)
Mega Man: new scratch-made MvC style Mega Man in Rockman Famicom cover art pose.
Rushing Beat: New Lord J taunt, and improved fight stance sprite, improved Douglas Bild stand sprite
Streets of Rage: new Max Thunder sprite (back turned) in SoR 2 and 4 designs
Undercover Cops: The Zan (Claude) sprite I teased in the gallery icon since January is done and in the gallery, along with Matt, completing the playable crew!
Marvel Comics: Black Widow (semi-remake of an old sprite edit pose), Crossbones (boss in DECO’s Captain America and the Avengers), Firestar (assist char in Maximum Carnage, but not in this outfit)
– DC Comics: Green Lantern Hal Jordan (scratch-made remake of the edit-based pose I made for him 20 years ago)
G.I.JOE: all-new Baroness fight stance (referencing her old sprite edit pose from the early days of this site)

Mini-logos
Marvel Comics: Crossbones (Captain America #363 cover), the Defenders
Capcom: Shadaloo (SCRI logo) and Street Fighter x Tekken

All new sprites and mini-logos have been added to the Graphics Generators, along with the brand-new (and long overdue) Beat ‘Em Up arcade background!

The “Memory Lane” page was updated for the first time in almost 10 years, mainly trimming a few things down and adding info on the image generators and videos.

Thanks to an incredibly kind Ko-Fi donation, I put enough money together to buy the latest version of MOHO (Anime Studio)! For the first time in half a year, I have access to all that old work I did for videos again, so I can get back to those video Works-in-Progress. Being without AS Pro 10 had one positive effect, because it forced me to dig deeper into using Blender (even if it’s the pre-2.80 version with the old Blender engine) and building the clips inside Vegas (instead of just using it as a clip assembler). All of those things will be used for the next Sprite Showcade:

It’s the final Friday of Final Fight’s 30th anniversary month, so this update is filled with new Final Fight sprites, including many you may have seen in a video a while ago, but there’s a whole new one, too. This update also features other beat ’em up characters and the debut of the NEW Brawlstreet crossover beat ’em up site header on the main menu (you may have to refresh a few times to see it). Let’s get into it!

Custom Sprites:
Final Fight: new sprites of Haggar (FF1 art pose), Axl and Slash (redone, better), Edi. E (scratch-made, FF1 waiting pose), Sodom (made from scratch), Poison (Capcom Fighting All-Stars alt), Dean, Bay Area Dog/Shiro
Double Dragon: Lopar/Roper (new, better standing sprite)
Streets of Rage: Dr. Zan
Kunio-kun: Misako and Kyoko – SD sprites of their Shin Nekketsu Kōha -Kunio-tachi no Banka outfits
IREM: the Vigilante. Kung-Fu Master was finally moved to its own gallery.
Technos: the red shirted bald enemy from Renegade

All sprites have been added to the main image generator, where you can make graphics like the ones I used to show off the sprites here.

The only April Fool’s trick involving the site happened to me yesterday when I thought I’d spend the whole time making 8-bit style sprites. HA! You’ll read about that in a bit.

GFX Generators – The oft-neglected Fake Screenshot generator (with 8-bit graphics) gets some love today. I spent much of yesterday untangling a bug in the engine that messed up font selections on a few screens (esp. the Mega Man boss intros). I also added sprites to:

– Custom 8-bit sprites: Dr. Bones McCoy, Dr. Herbert West, Dr. Clayton Forrester, Dr. Giggles. They were meant to be scratch-made Mega Man-style doctor sprites, but they really seem like more of their own thing.
– RCR/Kunio-Kun NES customs, media: Agent Dale Cooper and Shelly Johnson from Twin Peaks
(edit 10:20 PM:)

– RCR NES edits/customs, game chars: Pit (Kid Icarus classic)
– RCR/Kunio-Kun NES customs, media: Batman

Also: I cleaned up the the links section a bit. FINALLY!

Sorry, but I’m a bit low on time here. I’ll be back later to add them to the sprite galleries (and possibly throw in a new sprite). The new River City Ransom NES sprites are now in the gallery. The others aren’t because… I don’t know what style they are, really. They were supposed to be like Mega Man doctors (Wily and Light), but don’t. I’ll figure it out later.

Be sure to check out the news in last week’s update post if you haven’t been here for a while, as it includes new fighting-scale sprites and a preview of an upcoming pixel art print!

The ScrollBoss site is 17 years old today, but the celebration will go on for more than a day! For now, let’s deal with today’s newness:

Custom sprites
Golden Axe: the Bad Brothers
Streets of Rage: Onihime & Yasha SoR/BK3 (stand and crouch sprites), Abadede SoR/BK2
Crime Fighters series: Faust
Nintendo: Bowser
Kunio-Kun: Yamada
River City Ransom: Slick (Yamada’s counterpart)
Sega: Dr. Eggman/Dr. Robotnik (classic game style)

All that newness is also in the main GFX Generator, where you can make screenshots just like the one at the top of this post!

It’s been a while since I uploaded a video, so I put another short clip compilation, but finally with the real ScrollBoss theme (for better or for worse, that’s up to you).

Be ready for another update tomorrow!

Today is the eighth month’s ninth day, which mean this site celebrates 1989, the greatest year in video game history*!

This site even has a sub-section dedicated to the year for reasons you’ll see mentioned there. Then again, you’ll probably figure out why once you see all the stuff I’m celebrating (and there’s still a lot left out). Everything in this update is linked to that magical year when many of this site’s favorite games, series, consoles and more debuted. Unfortunately, there’s so much stuff that I couldn’t even fit it into 3 screenshots, so, as a first, the sprite preview is a video!

Custom Sprites:
Capcom: Quick Man added to Mega Man section.
– – Final Fight: two new scratch-made Cody sprites!
– – Strider (new separate section): (a new Tom Pooh sprite (and redone colors on the hand-up pose) in the Strider section

Nintendo: Tatanga (Super Mario Land)

Sega: scratch-made E-SWAT’s police ICE armor and enemy unknown/File 96 enemies
– – Golden Axe: resprited Tyris Flare fight stance
– – Shinobi: new scratch-made Pink Dragon and redone Kasumi sprites

Sunsoft: Tuff Turf’s heroes and lady added.

Technos: new standing sprites for Kunio, Riki, Hasebe, Alex and Ryan

Games(other): Prince of Persia (original) added.

DC Comics: the Joker in the 1989 NES Batman stance
Music: new gallery starts with new Chuck D (Public Enemy) sprite and older sprites and sprite edits.
Toys ‘n Toons: Marge, Lisa and Bart Simpson. The Simpsons cartoon started in 1989!
G.I. JOE: Snake-Eyes in his version 3 (1989) outfit
TMNT: Krang (in his standing pose from the 1989 beat ’em up)

Mini-Logos: Prince of Persia (Jordan Mechner), Public Enemy (Music) and the Simpsons (Television) added.

The new custom sprites and mini-logos have been added to the GFX Generators.

My apologies to any fans of 1989 games who were left out, like Mendel Palace/Quinty, Double Dragon 2(NES), Astyanax, Crime City, and dozens more. There are too many good 1989 games to celebrate and many of my older sprites needed to be redone. Let me know about your favorite 1989 games and characters in the comment section!

* – 1989 being the greatest game year is hyperbole mostly for fun, but also designed to drive disagreement-induced hits, but at least this website admits it.

This is just a small update with a few odds and ends added to the site, including a few things that I forgot to add in the last update.

Custom Sprites:
– Technos: Kunio-Kun (NES-like fighting stance)
– Tecmo: the new Ryu Hayabusa sprite was improved and another variation was added.

Mini-logos:
– Marvel: Marrow, Omega Red
– Movies: Do the Right Thing
– Nintendo: Super Smash Bros. (2014)

GFX Generators: The new items mentioned above were added to their respective characters along with the following things:
– GroupShot Generator: A Tecmo NES (Ninja Gaiden) setup was added to the 160×192 game boxes.
– Capcom: Chun-Li (added CvS sprites, tweaked palettes), Dudley (SF3-to-CvS converted sprite)
– Tecmo: Ryu Hayabusa (new and improved sprites and palettes)

Heads-up: Double Dragon Trilogy, a collection of the three original arcade Double Dragon games on Steam right now. It’s on sale for $4.79 until January 22! I haven’t bought and tried it yet, but I will before the sale is over.

There will be a themed update for both ScrollBoss and the main Illmosis site next week on January 20th. What’s the theme? Well, it’s on the 20th for a specific reason and I’ll have to upload it before 8 PM. While it isn’t specifically game-related, the theme’s name allows me to slip in some game stuff, including a boss I missed in the 1989 updates. That’s all I’m giving you for now.
