Shadow Dancer (arcade)
200x100 GFX Company: Sega
Genre: Platformer
Released: USA: 1989
From the game's European flyer
The young Ninja battles together with his faithful pet dog. In the center of the city, a group of terrorists are committing every imaginable atrocity known to man, including the planting of time bombs throughout the metropolis. Our youthful hero and his canine companion courageously set out to gather up all the explosives placed by the evil gang and annihilate the syndicate that manipulates them.
While the Sega Master System game Shadow Dancer is a port of this game, the Mega Drive/Genesis game Shadow Dancer is a different game with the same basic play methods. Even the way Yamato is deployed to grab enemies is slightly different, as you only need to hold down while pressing attack to send him out in the arcade version while the Mega Drive/Genesis version requires you to button charge a Yamatometer (my dumb term, not theirs) and let go when you want to let the dog out release the hound sic Yamato on your enemies.

None of the flyers mention the hero by name (at least not in English), but the original Japanese game supposedly stars Hayate, son of Joe Musashi (as explicitly stated in the Mega Drive game) while the U.S. version is probably considered to star Joe Musashi like the Mega Drive version. The back of the EU box (as seen on Sega Retro) refers to the ninja as Takashi, probably because all this wasn't confusing enough as it was. Both home versions agree that the dog's name is Yamato.

The enemies in this game are known as Asian Dawn (not to be confused with the group Union Lizard from the Mega Drive/Genesis game). Despite being unrelated to the Zeed group, the enemy ninja in the bonus round still bear a black version of Nakahara's Noh mask, much like the enemy ninja drones in the Revenge of Shinobi wear white versions of that mask.

Here are the mission titles:
Mission 1: OBSTRUCT THE ENEMY'S DEADLY MISSION!
Mission 2: DISRUPT THE ENEMY'S SUPPLY ROUTE!
Mission 3: RAID THE ENEMY SYNDICATE'S UNDERGROUND HEADQUARTERS!
Mission 4: CRUSH THE ENEMY'S EVIL PLAN!
Player Characters:
Joe Musashi (US version?) Hayate Musashi (JPN version?) Yamato
