auto-scroll
When the play area automatically moves in some direction without any input from the player.

Auto-scrolling playfields are commonly used for vehicle-based shoot 'em ups, but the technique appears in side-scrollers like Altered Beast. Usually, but not always, the scrolling movement stops at boss encounters.

Sometimes, auto-scrolling is specific to certain levels of a game. Notable examples include the specific World sections of the 2-D Mario games, the horseback riding scenes in Sunset Riders, the chase scenes in Alien Storm and the infamous Turbo Tunnel level in the original Battletoads.
Game list:
Alien Storm (arcade), Altered Beast (arcade), Battletoads (NES), Captain Commando (arcade), Ninja Combat (Neo Geo), Shinobi III (Genesis), Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge (SNES), Sunset Riders (arcade), Superman (arcade), Super Mario Bros. (NES)
