Comic book characters have had a heavy presence on this site since the early days, so today’s spotlight falls on superhero characters from Marvel and DC Comics. Back when I started the site, anyone who wasn’t Batman, the X-Men, or Spider-Man was considered an obscure character (sometimes by their own companies), but that didn’t stop me from making sprite edits of Green Lantern Hal Jordan (who was still dead and buried both in the literal AND wrestling sense of the word), Black Widow, and Taskmaster. Now I’m spriting everything from scratch, replacing all the edits I made from Capcom sprites while trying to add characters I’ve never sprited before, and this update is a combination of that!

Custom Sprites: new sprites (and new galleries) include…
DC Comics: all-new scratch-made sprites of the Atom, Firestorm, Power Girl, Steel
Superman (Taito): the unknown female character found in the game’s rom (something I found using Turaco and posted on the site back in the early ’00s) and the basic drones.
Marvel Comics: the Blob, Pryo, Sentinel (all three based on their Konami beat ’em up/Pryde of the X-Men pilot appearances), Spider-Man (improved scratch-made sprite in “Spider-Man the Arcade Game” pose), Mysterio, the Green Goblin

Mini-logos
DC Comics: Firestorm, Steel
Marvel Comics: the Blob, Mysterio, Pyro

All newness was added to the GFX Image Generators, where you can make pics like the ones at the top of this news post!

I planned to skip a day and post these sprites and something else on Tuesday, but I just wait. Is there still something coming this Tuesday? Of course, and if you didn’t get enough comic book content today, come back tomorrow for some video fun!

In the year 2000 AD, the first version of this website was cobbled together with a some brief game reviews, a few tips and some sprites. Now it’s pretty much just a lot of sprites. But how many sprites are really enough? There’s never enough! So here we go with the 19th Anniversary Update!

Final Fight: Maki (scratch-made FF2 fight stance)
IREM: Ryno (Ninja Baseball Bat Man)
Metroid: Ridley (classic)
NuChallenger: Lisa Santiago (new pose, better style than my 2014 sprite)
RAK Graphics(new page): Chakan the Forever Man
Marvel: The Kingpin, Nick Fury (scratch-made “Punisher” Capcom fight stance in three versions)
(added July 20th)

Denjin Makai: Amazoness, Silf, Valkyrie

Ryno was done for EddieMountainGoat, one of the main people I know who want to see the NBBM team finished! The female acrobats from Denjin Makai were added for SKB, another friend of the site!

By the way: I’ve had a chance to meet Robert A. Kraus, the creator of Chakan, a few times at events in the area this year and I was able to give him a printout of the Chakan sprite (and mini-logo) at the Youngstown Comic-Con a few weeks ago. Not only is he a great indy comic creator, writer and artist, but he’s a toy customizer and just a really cool person to talk to if you find him at a convention. If you’re like me and always wondered what the Chakan comics are like, check out the RAK Graphics site for a look at the Forever Man and more. There’s a mix of horror with sword & sorcery/fantasy and I’m glad I’m finally getting to read it.

Mini-logos: the Kingpin (Marvel gallery), Chakan (RAK Graphics gallery), Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (Midway/Williams gallery and DC gallery)

GFX Generators: Various improvements and bug fixes were made to the main engine, including allowing you to change text and font on the Picture Modification screen. I added that part a few days ago, but needed to make a few more fixes to it. Please let me know if you run into any problems with this.

the new sprites, mini-logos and more have been added, along with…
– other updated characters: Mega Man, Cammy, Chun-Li, Sakura, Vega, Apocalypse, Iceman, Rogue
– idle/fight stance added: Adon, Balrog, Blanka, Sagat, Blackheart, Captain America, Colossus, Gambit, Magneto, Juggernaut, Omega Red, Sentinel, Silver Samurai, Spider-Man, Shuma-Gorath, Storm (Marvel), Thanos
– fighter-sized screenstyles: Marvel Legends updated with X-Men Sauron-series box.

Here’s possibly the biggest part of the site update: Marvel vs. Capcom 1 endings have been added to the Fighter sprite generator (edit 2019-07-23: or just go to this separate generator page I just added that’s specifically Marvel vs. Capcom)!

Choose up to five characters, pick a background (65 so far), sprite layout (mostly based on actual endings) and frame, add your own text.
edit 2019-07-21: added MSHvsSF and SFA/Z3 looks (still MvC1 layout and character limits) and over a dozen SFA3 backgrounds to MvC 1 ending

ScrollBoss Shop: All prints are on sale for the rest of July! 8×10 and 8×11 prints are $4.00 each!
11 x 17/11 x 14 prints $8.00 each! Sale prices are also in effect for the main Illmosis print page, which has more than game or pixel-related prints.

I may add more to the update through the weekend, so don’t be surprised if this post changes. There’s one more thing I’ve got, but I may not have it ready before the day is over, but I’ll add it here once it’s done. It’s about 95%, but I’m waiting on a gift from a guest contributor you should recognize.

Whether you’ve been here before or this is your first visit, thank you for stopping and I hope you enjoy this mess of a site!

I hope you enjoyed this year’s offerings for the site, even if I didn’t get to finish some of the things I teased for it. There were a lot of sprites…

… and not all of them are even in that pic. I’ve added two more in this update.

Storm was in the X-Men print, but not on the site (until now) and the Chainsaw Boss from Crime Fighters was done during the DangerTerrorHorrorThon, but I didn’t really feel like he completely fit the theme for some reason.

edit: As much as I want this year over as soon as possible, I’ve got to add some stuff here.

The Steam Winter Sale is still going strong and I want to recommend some of my personal favorites:
River City Ransom: Underground (a worthy successor to the original), Fire Pro Wrestling World (the legendary series finally hits PCs with more customization than ever), Combat Core (in Early Access, a fun arena brawler for those to still miss Power Stone), Mercenary Kings (easily one of my favorite recent run ‘n gun games), and Owlboy (a pixel art masterpiece 10 years in the making, and it shows).

Most of 2017 was crappy for me, but some of the few good things I was able to experience this happened because of this site. Those pixel art commissions made up for the loss in day job hours and, fortunately, everyone I worked with was incredibly cool and paid me to sprite things I enjoyed making. The biggest event was being asked by Cuddly Rigor Mortis to make a print for the Gallery1988 Mattel show, and the limited edition print sold out! I finished a lot of my own personal wish-list sprites (the Capcom Aliens vs. Predator crew, completing the Mega Man 2 Robot Masters, the Last Dragon, Konami X-Men, Dr. West from Re-Animator, too many others to list). Lots of behind-the-scenes work was done on the site, and I’ve got another chunk almost done that will change and add a lot of sections in 2018. I want to thank you for the feedback and extra encouragement I got throughout the year, because it helped me get through the rough spots. See you in 2018!

There was a Marvel vs. Capcom-themed update yesterday, but Heihachi crashed it at the end, forcing me to do this update with more sprites and some new portraits!

Custom Sprites:
Tekken (new gallery): Heihachi (two new sprites), Nina Williams, and King II
Marvel: Wolverine, Colossus, Cyclops

Portraits: SFA3vs portraits for Heihaichi and Wolverine

all new items were added to the main GFX Generator!

By the way, those all-new (but only Colossus is giant-sized) X-Men sprites come from a print that makes its debut today!

**cue funky Konami X-Men music**
This print is guaranteed to increase the mutant population of your wall, but not to ward off masters of magnet. You’ve gotta do that on your own! It’s available now from the ScrollBoss shop page!

Well, that’s it for this theme. I’m gonna go get some re – –

So… another update? Okay. Come back tomorrow if you want to see how ridiculous this crossover gets!

Two new single image generators have been added: X-Men:Children of the Atom vs. screen and River City Ransom shops (newly added to the GFX Generator engine). Of course, there’s some new pixel art for you to have fun with in both of them!

Custom Sprites:
Marvel Comics: Phoenix/Jean Grey (MvC3 stance) and Mystique (Konami arcade stance)
River City Ransom: NES-style sprites of Provie, Bruno, Glen and Lilly (shop keeper) from River City Ransom: Underground, Ash Williams in S-Mart gear, the Merchant (RE4), and an improved Abobo (the old version was in the generator, but I didn’t like it enough to add it to the gallery).

Along with those sprites and the new generators, new CotA portraits made from art by Jim Lee and Alan Davis for Mystique, Jean Grey (redone), Phoenix, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Forge, Captain America and the Black Panther. The standalone CotA generator only has characters with all the necessary portraits and name graphics for the screen, but you can still use the one in the main image generator, even if the characters don’t have all the CotA goodies (though a few secretly have name graphics).

I’m kicking off this year with a couple of beat ’em up series that didn’t get much attention here last year, and that’s by accident.

Custom Sprites: Those two series now have their own galleries:
Rushing Beat: new scratch-made sprites of Rick Norton, Douglas Bild, Wendy Milan, Lord J, Dieter/Iceman and some drones from the first two Rushing Beat games start this gallery off on the good foot.
Crime Fighters: new scratch-made sprites of Blood and Boomer replace their old Capcom-based sprite edits, and so do new sprites of a Vendetta/Crime Fighters 2 thug.

All of that has been added to the main GFX Generator, along with a new (and more accurate) version of the X-Men Vs. Screen. There are now options to choose the stage display, including one that isn’t in CotA.

A generator just for that game will be added in an X-Men-centric update later this year.

As of last week (and I was told the day before our last day there), I don’t have a regular account for my day job (though I got some fill-in hours here and there), so I’m running a sale on prints in the shop until things get better. 8×10/8.5×11 prints are $5 and the 11 x 17 and 11 x 14 prints are only $8! That’s for the line art and pixel art prints, including the non game-related prints in the Illmosis shop (where you’ll find more prints).

That’s a big update, but it feels like it’s missing something… or someone. Maybe he’ll show up later…

edit: Guess who showed up to the update?

added to the Movie gallery and GFX Generator.

Thanks the SDCC exclusive NECA figure sets for Konami-style Ninja Turtles, the new TMNT game developed by Platinum and the X-Men getting a new movie, it’s a pretty good time to be a mutant. That’s why this update is happening!

Custom Sprites:
TMNT – new sprites of all four turtles, an improved version of the Foot Soldier sprite from a few weeks ago and a new pose.
Marvel – improved versions of the Storm and Dazzler from the FCBD update and plus a new outfit for each in that same pose.

All new pixel art has been added to the GFX Generators. The Foot Soldier’s palette has been reworked so that the ’80s toy palette fits in, so it’s all one sprite now. You’ll also find a nice new screenstyle in the Group Maker generator.

There’s no space for introductory yammering, only for the newness!

Custom Sprites
Atari: Thyra the Valkyrie, Merlin the Wizard (three versions of each) from Gauntlet
Capcom: Amazons and Kuniang M.A. Team (Strider), Metal Man (Mega Man)
Final Fight: brand new Two.P and J (fighting stances)
Konami: Bayou Billy West
Sega: Joe Musashi (new RoS fight stance), the evil amazons from Golden Axe (arcade and Genesis/Mega Drive versions)
Taito: the Priest from Cadash
Technos: Riki (Kunio-Kun series), Billy and Jimmy Lee (new scratch-made sprites)
Games (other): Gogan from the Legendary Axe
Toys & Cartoons: Captain N (!)
TMNT: Bebop and Rocksteady

Mini-logos – Believe it or not, it’s another A-to-the-mothereffin’-Z mini-logo update with the entire alphabet representing!

– Atari: Thyra, Thor, Merlin and Questor
– Capcom: Hugo (USF4 style)
– Epyx: Epyx
– Kaneko: DJ Boy
– Konami: S.P.Y. Special Project Y, Ultra Games
– Marvel: X-Men, The Uncanny X-Men
– Movies: RoboCop
– Nintendo: Captain N
– Sega: Alex Kidd (High Tech World style), Yamato (Shinobi), Zeed
– SNK: Ikari III, the rescue, Guerrilla War
– Taito: Fighter (Cadash), Mage(Cadash), Ninja(Cadash), Priest (Cadash), Violence Fight
– Tecmo: Ninja Gaiden (NES box), Wild Fang
– Technos: Billy (Lee), Jimmy (Lee)
– Victor: Legendary Axe

GFX Generators – All those new sprites, characters and logos were added to the generators.
– Groupshot Generator: box 160×192 gets four new TurboGrafx-16 set-ups
– Backgrounds: Three Ultra Street Fighter IV backgrounds, one Double Dragon Neon background and a remake of Final Fight 1-1
– Updated characters: Poison (blue palette from Mighty Final Fight)

Minus World – the “Run, Woman, Run!” article was updated.

Game Index – added: the Adventures of Bayou Billy.

I hope that made up for the poot-butt, small updates from the past few months. There won’t be any updates this gigantic for a while, but this Revenge of 1989 theme still has some surprises in store. No promises, but there might be an additional update later this week, including tune-ups of earlier content and things I didn’t have time to work into this update.

“Hey, why are there Gauntlet characters in a 1989 update?” Besides the fact that there was a good port of Gauntlet 2 for the Commodore Amiga, there’s a new Gauntlet game coming out this month!

BTW: the Boy and his Pup Kickstarter is almost done, so help out if you can!

Edit (September 20, 2014) Besides making a few fixes here and there, the following things have been added:
Mini-logos: Rolento (Ultra Street Fighter IV), Bebop and Rocksteady (TMNT Classics)
Custom sprites: Kunio-kun (Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari cover pose)
GFX Generators – All new content was added to their characters in the generators, fixes were made to a few characters (Andore/Hugo, Thyra the Valkyrie), the Lee Brothers new palettes were improved to include Double Dragon 1 sets (with the gray boots) and the “Mego: WGSH” has three new “head bubble” sets.

Okay, that’s enough for now.

Sprites – The Shinobi gallery has a few new animations for the arcade version of Shadow Dancer and Joe Musashi’s sword slash from the original Shinobi arcade game. The Marvel vs. Capcom gallery was redone.

Custom Sprites – A scratch-made Boomerang sprite and Sabretooth sprite edit (from his X-Men vs. Street Fighter sprites) were added to the Marvel gallery. Lisa Santiago added to the new Nuchallenger gallery. E.T. the Extra Terrestrial was added to the movie gallery.

Game Index – Shadow Dancer (arcade) and The Uncanny X-Men (NES) were added.

Mini-logos – Sega: Shadow Dancer (two versions), SNK: Street Smartmovie: E.T.

Graphic Generators – Lisa Santiago added to Other Games – Nuchallenger, ET added to movie, Boomerang added to Other Marvel villains, and Marvel’s Sabretooth gets his new old-school outfit sprite, a few more XMvsSF sprites and a slightly more comic-accurate palette. TMNT arcade font added to Avatar 100×100 in GroupShot generator.

In case you hadn’t heard, the Treachery in Beatdown City Kickstarter campaign was a success! The tactical brawler that’s part-beat ’em up and part-RPG will be finished and see the light of day. Congratulations to everyone in the Nuchallenger on being rewarded for all the hard work you’ve put into the project!

Updates will be small and far apart until after July 6th, the 2014 All-Americon convention in Warren, Ohio. My artist’s table has already been paid for, new line art is on the way and I’ll have prints for sale again. Stop by my table even if you don’t want to buy anything, because I’ll have some pixel art previews again. Getting ready for the show is going to take a lot of work, so I need to concentrate on that for a while. I can’t promise a big site anniversary update on July 19th, but I’ll do what I can to make it fun.

I apologize for the large gap between this and the last update, but I hurt my back at work a few weeks ago and the irritation was distracting enough to making site and sprite work difficult. My hit points are aren’t back to 100% just yet, but enough that I can get back to pixel and line art duties again.

April O’Neil was added to the TMNT gallery and Emma Frost (the White Queen) was added to the Marvel gallery. Both characters have been added to the VS Maker and GroupShot GFX Generators. Speaking of the generators…

All four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now have SFA3 portraits.

One more thing:

the improved Detective Comics #27 sprite is now in the DC Gallery.

edit: along with forgetting to mention that I’d updated the Crime Fighters entry in the Game Index last week, this week’s update adds a few more sprites, including the third boss’ intro and the seventh boss’ tribute to Platoon.
