So after the uploading the “Toys and Trouble” and watching the Joe Bob Briggs Red Christmas marathon on Shudder Friday night, I woke up Saturday thinking that I’d be able to get some rest. Then I go to Twitter and see that people are talking about how it was the anniversary day of Final Fight. I knew December was the month (and had been planning something for it long ahead of time), but could never find anything about the exact day. Even now, I can’t find anything other than the month and the year. Anyway, I couldn’t let the day slip by, so I worked like mad all day to finish (as much as I could) and put it on Twitter and Instagram. It’s not on YouTube yet because it’s not the full version of what I wanted to do. The main thing is that I’ve now made sprites of every hero, enemy and ally in the game, including the characters already brought into the Street Fighter Alpha series. They’re all in the video below:

Things that had to be finished for this clip: the broken wall part of the logo, gradient FIGHT shading, spriting more of Belger’s room and fixing issues with Sodom’s sprite. The new sprites for Axl & Slash, Sodom, Rolento, Edi.E, and Shiro (the Bay Area Dog) aren’t in the galleries YET, but will appear later in the month.

While I’m talking about Final Fight, the “Guy vs. Mad Gear” video isn’t going to make it out before the end of the year. I think I’ve got about 85% of the sprites I need for it. Thing is, I’m just kinda tired. I tried to do too much at once this year (there’s STILL stuff you haven’t seen yet), was too worn out from day job work and it’s going to need more time. It’s probably for the best, because the Showcade video idea made me rethink all my other video ideas, so I think I’ll get that show going stable first before going back to that fight scene. I’ll probably try to take a REAL break after I’m done this year, but then I said that more than once earlier this year.

Stay tuned, though, because this site still has some business to take care of before this year is over!

First things first, if you’re reading this on the site’s main menu, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, the layout’s slightly different. I’ve moved the header, added some new header images (with many more to come) and rearranged a few other things, but I’m not done yet. Please expect more main menu mutations in the near future.

Toybox/ToyBoss: “Wait, there’s a toy section on this site?” Yeah, a small toy section was made for the site back when the game-related figures I wanted were in my ramen-life price range. That was an entire era of G.I. JOE figures ago (the Joe vs. Cobra/Spy Troops/Valor vs. Venom style that most of the customs are in). This was originally going to be part of the Karnovember update, but I kept wanting to make sure it debuted with new things, like new pics of the G.I.JOE Radd Spencer and Rolento customs, because I didn’t have a camera when I finished the last details on the figures and kept forgetting to take shots with the new camera. I also added some other quick pics, including a couple of Marvel beat ’em up and side-scroller teams that I’ve completed in Marvel Legends scale. I’ve got ideas for better photo set-ups in the future, so just know that I didn’t revive this part of the site just to let it rot again.

Game Index: added Spider-Man (arcade)

Custom Sprites:
Masters of the Universe: Mer-Man and Catra (Filmation designs)
G.I. JOE: Hawk (versions 1 and 2)
Horror: because it’s Friday the 13th, Jason has an updated version of the Pt. III outfit/Pt. VII Axe kill pose (seen on the NES cart box). The shading is now closer to the version seen in the Horror 3 vs. 3 print. I also condensed the Friday the 13th section so Jason and his mother have sub-galleries with their older sprites.

As usual, all the new custom sprites have been added to the image generators, and the fighter-scale image generator now has the series 5 G.I.JOE card added to the G.I.JOE layout (with an explosion obviously based on the new Hawk sprite’s shape).

Custom Sprites: Joe & Mac finally get fighter-sized custom sprites and their own gallery, but they’re not alone! It’s Karnovember, so the “Joe & Mac Returns” version of Karnov is there, too!

Mini-Logos: Guest pixel arist Sage Freehaven has sent more mini-logos to add! Since there’s now non-wrestling logos there, I made a main gallery for Sage Freehaven’s work and updated the original wrestling gallery. Also updated were:
Data East: Joe & Mac, Joe & Mac Returns
Compile: Compile’s logo

GFX Generators:
– added: Joe & Mac
– updated: Karnov, Sakura (MSH vs SF Sunburned palettes), Captain America (fixed/added U.S. Agent palettes)

In 2006, a small town arcade was forced to close due to machinations of opportunistic politicians and preachers. The arcade’s owner was run out of town and the cabinets, mostly horror games, were ordered to be destroyed in a public ceremony. One of the former employees, Amelia, refused to let this happen. Rallying a crew of fellow misfits, she liberated the coin-op machines, evaded the local police through multiple states until reaching the one place outside the reach of the law: infamous Alexandria Mall.

The legend of the Alexandria Mall is too long to repeat here, but ask any witness of the midnight skirmish that caused the building to be burned to the ground only to reappear the next morning will tell you how that was only the beginning of the weirdness. Amelia used the doomed machines to start “The Arcade of the Damned,” and began to hunt down additional coin-op games with far more sinister histories.

Custom Sprites
Illmosis/ScrollBoss: Amelia
Castlevania: Elizabeth Bartley (Bloodlines)
Night Slashers: Vampire Boss
Horror: a new Freddy sprite in the same style as the 2018 Horror print, Nancy Thompson (Elm Street 1 style), Sam (Trick ‘R Treat), the Bishop of Battle (Nightmares). Improved sprites of Michael Myers (Halloween 2 lobby card and sheet disguise sprites) and Mike (Phantasm)

Mini-logos: Trick ‘R Treat and the Bishop of Battle added to movies gallery.

The HorrorThon continues tomorrow when things get wild!

It’s the middle of October, and some of you have already started to get into the spooky season. Here’s a little image generator update to add a bit to the festive mood:

GFX Generators: The Marvel vs. Capcom ending (found in the fighter-sized generator and the MvC generator) now has frames based on Darkstalkers 3 (and the billion other names for the arcade versions/offshoots) with the top of the screen opened up more. Only the red and blue versions for now. Also, the Vampire Savior stages have been added to that and the other screenstyles with stage bg options: Group 384×224, Vs. 384×224, Comics 88×136, and Box Tributes. Also, a few arcade sprites were added to Felicia, Demitri, Donovan and Victor, including all four getting their Midnight Bliss sprites.

The slow crawl of converting old parts of the site to the new format continues with the Tips section, something that’s been part of the site since the beginning. It’s now part of the “Info Center” group on the site. Some tips were fixed, rewritten, or had screenshots added. It mostly looks the same for now, but I still have the goal of consolidating the coding and look of the site.

Game Index: Alisia Dragoon (Genesis), Street Fighter Alpha 3 (arcade), Undercover Cops (arcade)

Sprites: Alisia Dragoon (just the Stage start graphic

GFX Generators: added Street Fighter Alpha 3 stages (Cammy, Dan, Dhalsim, Rose) to the main fighter-size generators, X-Men:CotA-style added to Marvel vs. Capcom ending, and some other stuff I forgot that was in the mix of what I uploaded.

About a month ago, after “the Revenge of 1989” update in August, I had a bit of pain in my hand. Part of it is due to my day job, but I’ll bet that all the pixel art I’ve been doing (including the unseen stuff for unfinished projects) hasn’t helped. I slowed down a bit and started stretching my hands more, which helped, but my drawing hand still gets a little sore if I spend too much time spriting. I’m going keep taking it a bit easier for a while, but don’t think that means you’ll be safe in late October.

Finally, a day when Batman gets more attention than other characters! I dropped some Batman-related sprites in the Revenge of 1989 update, but I’ve got a couple more AND a sprite that finally finishes a beat ’em up crew!

DC Comics: Improved the “Blue and Gray” sprites of Batman, added a Dick Grayson teen Robin
Ninja Baseball Bat Man – Roger finally steps up to the plate and completes the playable team!

These sprites have been added to the fighting game-scale GFX Generator and Batman now has extra palettes.

One more thing: here’s a quick little animation of Batman I was working on. Still rough (esp. the cape), but far enough to show where it is now:

Bonus:

Here’s a video from the excellent Superhero VG Channel about what things were like when the Batman 1989 hit:
